The modern academic plays many roles. By and large, he or she receives little or no explicit instruction in any of them. Academic training is largely an apprenticeship, and a learn by doing and observing experience. As a result it is somewhat haphazard and catch as catch can. New academics are often “thrown in at the deep end”, confronting challenges for which they have little preparation, and can continue to confront new challenges with similarly sparse preparation as their careers advance.
This website is intended to provide a forum for sharing experience and advice. A hierarchy of Categories attempts to provide some top-level structure; you can access all the posts in any Category via the Menu, or by clicking on the Category. An unlimited range of Tags provides finer grain organization; you can access all the posts with any Tag by clicking on the Tag. The relative popularity of top Tags is reflected in the Tag Cloud. Posts can appear under multiple Categories or Tags. The Search box provides even more flexible access to relevant posts. You can view Recent or Top Posts or access all Posts by a given Author. One can always return to this home page by clicking on the site title.
You are encouraged to contribute your own experience and advice via Comments, to “like” Posts, which can help identify especially useful ones, and to share this site or individual Posts with your social networks. New Authors are also welcome. Authors can contribute via their own Posts. These can be original material or pointers to relevant information elsewhere on the web; they can range from quick tips to long essays. If you are interested in becoming an Author, please send a gmail to the Administrator at e.freuder with subject heading “TMA Author”.
